Did you know that skin cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer in the United States? The good news is that it is one of the most preventable forms of cancer and is highly treatable when detected early. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, which is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and save lives by educating others on strategies for prevention and early detection.

Prevention of Skin Cancer

Most cases of skin cancer result from exposure to the sun. The ultraviolet (UV) light in sunlight damages the DNA in the skin cells, eventually leading to skin cancer. This damage can take place years before cancer develops.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher for sun protection. However, sunscreen alone is not enough. Some commonsense precautions will help avoid skin damage. Just staying in the shade is a great way to limit your UV exposure. If you are going to be in the sun, use a hat, and wear sunglasses offering UV protection. Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds which can also contribute to skin cancer. Make sure to keep newborns and children protected from harmful UV rays.

Getting Moles Checked

When performed regularly, a self-examination may alert you to changes in your skin and help in the early detection of skin cancer. The main kinds of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. They each have different appearances, so it’s important to watch out for early warning signs. Any changes of any kind, even if not painful need to be investigated by a dermatologist.

Symptoms of skin cancer include a growth that increases in size or a mole that changes its color, or texture, or has an irregular outline. Additionally, watch out for spots that continue to itch, hurt, scab, or bleed or opens sores that do not heal within three weeks.

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them. Don’t delay! See your dermatologist immediately! Early detection and treatment can save your life!
